– Due to the pandemic, Curaçao had to do without a carnival for no less than two years. But now that it can continue this time, the enthusiasm is greater than previously according to interest groups. “This is very good for the economy.”
There are no hard figures yet about the carnival period, but “the hotels are all very well occupied,” says Hans Slier of Curaçao Hospitality Tourism Association, CHATA.

“It is still a mix of tourists,” says Slier. “It is a bit difficult with Europe right now because flights are limited. So I think relatively many people from the U.S. and South America are here. Our carnival is also highly appreciated in the region itself. It attracts many people from the Caribbean and Suriname.”

“Carnival is the largest, most important event for the island,” says Slier. “The North Sea Festival will not take place this year, but we do have the Blues Festival. Festivals like this put us on the international map.”

Carnival is ‘very good’ for the economy. “And it’s not necessarily about the hotels,” says Slier. “It starts with the hotels and the CTB that attract tourists. But it is the whole economy that benefits. Such as the car rental, the diving schools and the excursions. But in the end, the banks, supermarkets, all importers and restaurants also benefit. So we are happy that carnival is back.”

The tourism board says it has been busy for months “with international promotion” to attract as many tourists as possible. The interest is also “slightly greater than before the pandemic,” says director Muryad de Bruin.

“We also have a good relationship with international media and there too you see that there is more interest. We are fully prepared to show them the best side of our island. Influencers have also come to cover our carnival.”

The tourism board wants the Curaçao carnival to be ‘successful internationally’, but there is a point of concern. “A very important aspect is how clean our island is,” says De Bruin. “So keeping it clean is high on our agenda.”

The island struggles with street litter and the dumping of bulky waste in nature. Minister Cooper (Transport) wants to intervene in the long term. Vehicles used for illegal dumps should be taken away and crushed, he said earlier.

Chata is disappointed that KLM went from two-daily flights to once a day in October. ‘A quarter fewer’ tourists from the Netherlands. Nevertheless, optimism can be heard at Chata. “Because that will come back in April,” says Slier. “Then it will be several flights again.”
