Van Huffelen: Recognizing gay rights “in principle” is a matter for autonomous countries

But, she adds: respecting human rights is “in principle” a national matter for the autonomous countries. The reason for the parliamentary questions is the decision of the government of Curaçao to appeal against a conviction by the Court. The court ruled that Curaçao and Aruba violated their own legislation by discriminating against gay couples.

Van Huffelen has, she writes, contacted the Pisas cabinet about the matter. Dutch Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture, and Science also raised the issue during his working visit to Curaçao and Aruba last week. Dutch Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius of Justice talked to representatives of the LGBTQ+ community when she was in Willemstad.
