“I am pleased with the ruling that people of the same sex can now marry in Aruba and Curaçao. It is good that there is now clarity for those who want to tie the knot, that in our Kingdom it does not matter where you live and whom you love,” said the state secretary.

The Court’s verdict follows two cases that were filed in Aruba and Curaçao, including by human rights organization Human Rights Caribbean on behalf of two women who want to get married.

Marriage is not immediately opened. The parties can appeal to the Supreme Court in The Hague until March 6, 2023. Lawyer Mirto Murray says that he hopes that the first marriage will take place on March 7, 2023.
