U.S. Consulate commemorates fallen soldiers

WILLEMSTAD – British and American fallen soldiers were commemorated Friday during Remembrance Day at the American consulate. The governor, government and a Dutch delegation were present at the ceremony, Defense Caribbean reports.

Remembrance Day, also called Armistice Day or Poppy Day and in Dutch called ‘Dodenherdenkingsdag’, is the day in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries on which the fallen of the First World War and all wars and armed conflicts since then are commemorated.

Among the guests were Governor Lucille George-Wout and Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas. A delegation of Defense in the Caribbean was also present, where the Spiritual Care and the ‘Tamboers & Pijpers’ also took care of part of the ceremony.

In the Netherlands, the white carnation has long been associated with support for veterans. For Americans and English, the ‘Poppy flower’, the large poppy, symbolizes those who have made the highest sacrifice. This flower survived in the devastated landscape around Flanders during the First World War.

Because of the close ties with both countries, a Dutch delegation is also present at every commemoration of Remembrance Day, according to Defense Caribbean.
