– Minister of Education Sithree ‘Cey’ van Heydoorn believes that studying should be possible for everyone. “However, there are concerns about graduate students who are unable to pay off their student debt,” says Van Heydoorn. This is apparent from a press conference held on Thursday morning by the government and the Curaçao Student Finance Foundation (SSC).
Van Heydoorn emphasizes that young people are always central to both the government and the SSC. He believes that they should be given the opportunity to study optimally. The government encourages students as much as possible, also to study in the region. He indicates that studies in Curaçao, the Netherlands, Colombia, America, Canada, and Costa Rica will be funded. However, the minister is concerned about graduate students who are in trouble because of the repayment of high student debt.

The Student Finance Foundation helps with start-up costs and provides financial support to potential students if they meet a number of conditions. For example, Dutch nationality is a condition and one of the parents must live in Curaçao. The study must be recognized and the study must not be possible in Curaçao.

Sidney ‘Bicho‘ Justiana, director of SSC, explains that the foundation tries to make students more assertive and wants them to make strategic choices. “A student must think critically, have more general knowledge, and be solution-oriented. A student’s knowledge must be diversified.”

The foundation will support students in making the right study choice because changes of study take place too often. According to Justiana, parents also have a responsibility. “Parents will have to save more so that their child has the opportunity to go to college. Parents and students need to prepare for higher costs, both for the house they will live in, but also for living expenses.” Justiana says that there is cooperation with the government to make studying in the region more ‘match’ with Curaçao.

Students can contact the ministry with questions. The minister hopes to be able to provide more detailed information in January.
