Secretary of State wants a greater role for parliaments of CAS countries in the process of consensus state laws

WILLEMSTAD – State Secretary Alexandra van Huffelen of Kingdom Relations announced on Monday that she would like to contribute to the role of parliaments in legislation for the entire Kingdom. In a letter, the State Secretary responds to the agreements made during the last Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) in September.

In September, the parliament delegations of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten (CAS countries) discussed the procedure for the consensus national legislation with the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives in The Hague. In the IPKO appointment list they emphasize the importance of support, transparency and clarity.

There is currently no clarity in the Statute of the Kingdom regarding the powers and role of governments and parliaments. According to the State Secretary, this needs to be structured more.

The participants of the IPKO also made a request for more transparency in the negotiations for the Kingdom Acts. A proposal was made to involve the four parliaments more for greater clarity.

Other subjects of the IPKO were the history of slavery, international treaties and nature conservation. Van Huffelen reiterated that the government will respond to recommendations about slavery’s past before the end of this year.

Conservation is also a top priority. The Dutch government is committed to nature conservation, sustainable development and agricultural policy on Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.
