– Schools on the ABC islands must promote the native language to improve reading education. That is one of the important conclusions of a large-scale field study conducted by Radboud University and the University of Curaçao (UoC).

The two universities investigated the multilingualism and reading development of 589 children in primary schools in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.

According to the UoC university, the results show interesting findings. Ronnie Severing, the driving force behind the research project, says that the results of the research have been included for a wider audience in the March edition of the magazine Didactief. Didactief is a widely distributed magazine among teachers in the Netherlands.

“The development of language and reading in Papiamento and Dutch has been examined, depending on the order of instruction: Papiamento-Dutch, or vice versa, and what the influence is of child, family and school characteristics.”

“The study among 296 preschoolers from eleven schools shows that the children score higher in Papiamento than in Dutch. In the case of letter knowledge in Papiamento, for example, it appears that there is a connection with (in due course) more letter knowledge in Dutch,” says Severing.

Children who recognized more letters in Papiamentu also acquired letter knowledge in Dutch faster, the research shows. “Their early literacy in Papiamentu therefore forms an important basis for the development of literacy in Dutch.”

In other words, the mother tongue is the ideal basis for Papiamento and Dutch. This means that preschoolers in the Caribbean Netherlands have a good starting point to start learning to read in Papiamentu in group 3.

Children who start learning to read in Papiamento in groups 3 and 4 achieve higher levels of letter knowledge and technical reading in Papiamento, while children who start learning to read in Dutch achieve higher results in that language.

According to the research, instructional order does indeed have an effect on the development of technical reading. “But the differences are small. In children who first learned to read in their mother tongue, Papiamento, their level of technical reading in Papiamento appeared to positively influence the development of technical reading in Dutch,” says Severing.

Children who first learned to read in a foreign language, Dutch, did not have this positive effect. “This means that first learning to read in Papiamentu gives students better basic reading skills, which will also help them later on in learning to read in Dutch.”
