WILLEMSTAD
– The tourism sector in Curaçao has reacted with shock to KLM’s decision to almost halve the number of flights from Schiphol to Hato in the coming months.
At the beginning of this month, the airline announced that it would operate two daily return flights to Willemstad this winter (the high season for the Caribbean). That decision has been reversed: except for a few days, only one flight will be operated until April. The reason for the decision is the staff shortage at KLM, especially in the maintenance department. Since the end of the corona pandemic, the business community (but also governments) has been struggling with increasing staff shortages, as a result of which more and more companies are reducing their services and productions.

KLM’s decision has hit Curaçao hard because it will cost the island the income of 36,000 tourists. Prime Minister Pisas has announced that he will raise the issue with his counterpart Premier Rutte, but this is not expected to change Air France subsidiary KLM. The measure also affects other distant destinations. Bonaire, Aruba and Sint Maarten remain unaffected.
