KLM consideration: “Rather less on Curaçao that is frequently flown to than canceling complete destinations”

SCHIPHOL – KLM would rather cancel extra flights to a destination that is already flown at high frequency than to stop another altogether. This is according to KLM Netherlands director Bas Gerressen in an interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

In addition to Curaçao, KLM also flies less to destinations such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Washington, Calgary, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Quito, Nairobi and Kigali. But also, typical winter destinations such as Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Schiphol wants fewer passengers departing locally, because that is where the pain lies. Not with the transfers. KLM itself has too few staff on the ground and late delivery of aircraft parts, which means that aircraft are in the hangar longer.

Curaçao has a lot of local departing travelers. I understand the emotion, because the announcement of the intervention came shortly after the publication of the timetable. But for the rest of this year we are still on the number of seats from before the corona crisis,” Gerressen told De Telegraaf about the decision that is causing a lot of commotion in Curaçao.

KLM is sticking to a schedule with one daily flight to Curaçao, with the exception of the Christmas holidays, says the director. An attempt by the Curaçao Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas with Prime Minister Rutte cannot change that.

Pisas says the decision has major implications for the island’s economy. A large part of the tourists comes from the Netherlands. In September, almost 16,000 people flew from Schiphol to Curaçao. The island now fears that it will miss out on thousands of visitors in the coming months. The most negative scenario assumes 30,000 fewer visitors.

Gerressen is not in a position to reverse the decision, he tells De Telegraaf. “It is also not the case that the three extra flights a week, with the exception of the Christmas holidays, were completely sold out. Do not forget that compared to the corona period, other destinations in the world are now open, such as Thailand or Bali, where many people also go. And we can rebook the people who have already booked on another flight to Curaçao.”

Gerressen now runs the risk that competitors will jump into the gap and customers will no longer return to KLM. For example, Brussels airport is currently bursting with yellow license plates.

He tells De Telegraaf: “We have to have our house in order, so that we have satisfied staff and reliable and good service to our customers. We need to get some rest and rebuild from there. If circumstances permit, we will scale up again. Hopefully that will be with effect from the summer timetable.”
