Investigation into illegal holiday rentals

WILLEMSTAD

– At the initiative of the Curaçao Hospitality & Tourism Association (CHATA), a solution for the illegal rental of holiday homes was looked at last week during a meeting with the Ministry of Finance.

The representatives of the tourism and catering industry, the Ministry of Finance, Tax Accountants Bureau (SBAB), Curacao Tourist Board (CTB) and the Fiscal Affairs Sector want a solution to reduce illegal holiday rentals on the island. The illegal rental by both individuals and organizations is seen as a problem because the necessary tax is not paid on this.

CHATA has made a list of names of well-known individuals and organizations that offer illegal holiday homes. The list will be used to track the rental. In addition, research will be conducted into the various tourist accommodations, such as rental homes, hotels, catering establishments, car companies and diving schools. By doing the research, the representatives will get a clearer picture of the current rental market.

Minister of Finance Javier Silvania hopes that this research will ultimately enable honest taxpayers to compete in the market. Now that is made difficult by the tax evaders. In three months’ time, the SBAB will present the results of the investigation and checks to the Minister and discuss the results in a meeting. The results will also be made public, in the interests of transparency.
