WILLEMSTAD

– Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas has been able to reassure the healthcare union CBV: the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) will not go bankrupt.

But, he immediately adds: “I said that last weekend because we all have to avoid bankruptcy. My statements are heavy, but it is the reality, technically the CMC is bankrupt. I say things as they are. This causes unrest among staff, patients, and suppliers who have been waiting for their money for a long time. But we might be heading in the same direction.”

The prime minister further explains that measures will be discussed in the Council of Ministers this week and that a press conference will follow. There is an outline agreement with the CMC and the management has already signed it, according to Pisas. Now the governor still has to agree to a draft national decree.

Pisas says that the CMC agrees with the solutions that are on paper. With the authorization of the governor, the problems must be solved ‘once and for all’. The recommendations in the report of the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) will be followed literally.

The outline agreement will be discussed in the Council of Ministers, according to Pisas in the Fòrti government center just after the CBV handed him the letter. The healthcare union felt that the prime minister should explain further after his statement last weekend that the hospital was almost bankrupt. “That has led to a lot of unrest, not only among our supporters, the healthcare staff but also among the population,” said CBV chairman Annaliza Mathilda.

“We must be able to keep the peace and have asked the Prime Minister in our letter to take care of this. For us, bankruptcy means that the hospital will actually close.” Mathilda has indicated that she is satisfied with the Prime Minister’s answer. It has been promised that the CBV will be regularly involved in the steering group and so will continue to monitor developments.
