WILLEMSTAD –

Medical specialists in Curaçao refuse to work for a salary of 295,000 guilders. If the court rules in favor of the Curaçao government and such a scenario occurs, they will terminate their employment at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC). This was one of the messages conveyed during the court case between the CMC and the government.

The legal battle revolves around the application of the Top Incomes Act (LNT), which sets a limit on the salaries that officials in the (semi-)public sector can earn.

The lawyers representing the CMC and the specialists who have joined the case argue that the LNT applies only to government institutions and not to private institutions like the CMC. They also challenge the definition of the law and argue that specialized doctors do not fall under the category of top officials as described in the new legislation.

Currently, there are 49 specialized doctors working at the CMC, and an additional 19 doctors work outside the CMC but are not subject to the LNT.
