HRDC makes it clear to IPKO that refugee reception in Curaçao is still inhumane, despite sweet talk

WILLEMSTAD – On the eve of the Interparliamentary Consultations (IPKO), Human Rights Defense (HRDC) once again draws attention to the humane reception of Venezuelan refugees in Curaçao. According to the human rights organization, Amnesty International and Refugee Work Netherlands, this is still not the case.

In the letter that the human rights organizations have sent to the Presidents of the Parliament of Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten and to the Kingdom Committee of the House of Representatives and the Senate, they request special attention for refugees and crisis migrants who have arrived from Venezuela in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom to seek security and stability.

HRDC demands humane, open alternatives to detention for people seeking protection in Curaçao, in line with the Curaçao coalition agreement. There must also be a judicial review for the decision to and the extension of detention of aliens.

People in immigration detention should also have unfettered access to understandable information about their rights and procedure, and unfettered access to a legal aid provider. Just like free legal aid for those who cannot afford it. Human rights organizations should have structural access to immigration detention.
