General practitioners in Curaçao are fed up; they are threatening to go on strike

WILLEMSTAD – Minister Dorothy Pietersz-Janga of Public Health will be given three weeks to take concrete steps to realize a doctor’s office. If not, the general practitioners of Curaçao will cancel the evening, night and weekend shifts as a first step. This is stated in a letter that the General Practitioners Association (CHV) has sent to the minister.

The most important requirement for realizing a GP’s office is setting a rate for evening, night and weekend shifts. Until now, GPs have never received extra payment for this.

Social Insurance Bank (SVB) takes the position that the reimbursement is already included in the subscription price that they pay to general practitioners for each insured patient.

The general practitioners felt that they were being misled by the minister. Last August a meeting was held between the general practitioners and the minister, during which the realization of a doctor’s office structure for primary care in the evening, night, and weekend was discussed.

According to the GPs, the minister has done nothing with the agreements made during that conversation. Not even after two reminders. Only this year will the minister respond and say that realizing a GP office in the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) is not possible, but that she wants to ‘continue to search together with the GPs’ association for a weighty solution that can be implemented soon for primary care in the evening, night and the weekend.

Medical professionals are now fed up. The lack of support and a decision by Pietersz-Janga to reorganize care in the evening, night and at weekends is not acceptable for the GPs.

The letter is therefore the last attempt to persuade the minister to make concrete agreements within a reasonable period of time for setting up a GP office for evening, night and weekend services at a separate rate.
