Emblem designer responds: “I drew the images myself”

In recent days it has been raining criticism on her design: the hummingbird is not the national bird of Curaçao (nor blue, but green) and the depicted cactus does not grow in Curaçao. The boat looks like a ‘Venezuelan go-fast’, is another (stereotyping) criticism. Shutterstock’s images are fueling more heated discussions on social media.

“As a graphic designer, this is a high point in my career. When you enter a competition in your profession, you want to win. I used my talent to make something meaningful for my island and it was an honor to do that.”
