THE HAGUE
– The pace at which Curaçao pays off its outstanding debt to the Netherlands is so slow that the country is almost three centuries in debt. This can be deduced from an overview that State Secretary Van Huffelen sent to the Dutch House of Representatives today.
After the Netherlands had canceled the biggest share of the Antillean government debt in the context of 10-10-10, the autonomous country of Curaçao started with a debt of 1,568 million guilders with a term ranging from 10 to 30 years, at a low-interest rate. In the ten years to 2020, Curaçao has borrowed more than 800 million in The Hague. From 2016 to 2020, 8.2 million was repaid annually. At that rate, it will take another 290 years to settle the debt.
The figures relate to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, the debt to the Netherlands has risen to more than 3 billion euros due to the liquidity support. Negotiations on the repayment of the corona loans will start this week.
