Awareness fund, but no reparations for slavery past

– Reparations for the Dutch role in the slavery past will not be made. The Rutte cabinet is not in favor of it and can count on a majority in the Dutch House of Representatives. 

 

So it remains with an awareness fund of 200 million euros, 8 million for the annual July 1 commemoration, and 27 million for a National Slavery Museum. The left-wing groups think the 200 million is not enough, the right-wing groups do not want an awareness fund at all, but a majority supports the cabinet’s proposal. The expenditure of the fund will be determined partly in close consultation with organizations in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom and Suriname. In addition, organizations can make project proposals and apply for a subsidy.

Education and research will play an important role in the awareness-raising process, emphasized Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf, who acknowledged that conscious attempts have been made in the past to “erase” the painful passage of the slavery past. In the 10-hour parliamentary debate, the name of the Curaçao resistance hero Tula was mentioned many times, including by Prime Minister Rutte:

Respect for this man, who of course stands for the maroons, for Jolicoeur, for Baron, for One-Tété Lohkay and all the big names.”
