Niky Terzakis admits to press agency Belga that he is short on cash, but the carrier has big plans with new investments and routes. “We will continue our activities in 2023, our shareholders are not giving up,” said Terzakis.

In recent days, several Belgian media reported the imminent demise of Air Belgium. The company’s pockets would be empty and if ten million euros are not provided by the shareholders before the end of the year, it would be the end of the story.

Not true, Terzakis tells Belga. “This rumor hurts us. It has been written for five years that Air Belgium is almost bankrupt while we are looking for funds,” said the CEO, who finds the reporting “boring and exhausting”.

Niky Terzakis adds that he is looking for a much higher amount than that ten million euros, not for survival, but for in-depth investments. Air Belgium announced last week that it would suspend flights to the Caribbean, including Curaçao and Aruba.

However, the airline will open new routes, according to the CEO; in the interview, he does not mention any destinations. Since September, the Belgian carrier has also been flying to South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town) and this will not change.

Terzakis says that Air Belgium is in talks about the investments with the largest shareholders: the Chinese Hongyuan Group (49 percent), two Walloon government institutions and a Belgian federal private equity company, who together have a 45 percent stake. The airline will soon make new announcements about this, according to the CEO.
